Software version

Is there any way to find out what software version is installed (for the cars operating system, not Sensus or the Apps)?
I ask because I've seen a few references on here to members cars having software updates carried out, yet my dealer is telling me that my fairly early car doesn't need an update.
Mind you, one of his staff did let slip that the dealerships IT system was so antiquated that all their systems slow down whenever a car's software was being updated!
