Delay compensation/car lease

Post by Emwra » Wed Jun 13, 2018 12:23 pm

Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone who has been advised their car has been significantly delayed has been offered any kind of compensation or an alternative car to cover the delay period?

The arrival of my XC40 has been pushed back over three months. I’m due to have a baby in September and this delay means I’ll potentially have a newborn and no car for 6/8 weeks.

Personally I don’t feel I should be left out of pocket by Volvos failure to manage supply and demand and think it would be correct of them to offer an alternative vehicle to cover the time period I’ll be without. If anyone has had any luck arranging anything like this with Volvo it would be good to hear from you.

Thanks.

What does your contract say about delivery dates, delays, that sort of thing? That will drive (no pun intended) what your contractual rights are. I suspect that it might be something about if not delivered within X days of a particular date then you have right to cancel and walk away, but nothing more.

I contacted Volvo Customer Services when my delivery date was put back from June to November. I was advised to contact the dealer about the V40 bridging scheme. Apparently you can hire a V40 at a reasonable cost until the XC40 is delivered. However, when I contacted the dealer I was told that they had chosen not to participate in the scheme. I sent another e-mail to Volvo UK but they didn’t reply.

It might be worth you asking your dealer about the scheme. Good luck!

Can I ask why you will be "out of pocket". Have you paid for it in advance?
If it's a part exchange they should honour the deal you made surely.

My dealer also said the V40 bridging wasn't available. My current car expires in September so not looking promising.

I have a V40 as a bridging lease - the dealer offered and withdrew it the next day once I had a build date of November confirmed.

I emailed the CEO of Volvo directly and within an hour a reply and a V40 arranged. Funny that!
Ordered 12/03/18 - D4 R Design Pro - Fusion Red.
Build date - 02/11/18

Hi Becksie, we are in a very similar situation and it’s very frustrating. We have a newborn and are stuck with our current small car when we thought we’d have our xc40 by June. The dealership are refusing to stand by our original contract, although the delays are not our fault. Can you tell me the name and email address of the CEO that you contacted?

I also don't see why I should be out of pocket because my car has been delayed from September to December.

My dealership told me that they have a finite number of V40s available (so I would have to request one yesterday pretty much) to XC40 customers which would cost £199 a month and do not include insurance, plus they are only allowed to be used for 3 months at a time at this point the lease runs over into a 2 year contract unless you return the car and exchange it for a different one.
This is a huge amount of money, not only will I have to fork out £199 but also pay to transfer my insurance to a V40 and then pay to transfer it again to another V40 and then to my XC40 when I do eventually get it. That's a huge amount of money wasted!

I am without a car shortly and I cannot afford to pay that kind of money.
If I had known about the delays, lack of communication and interest from Volvo and their dealerships I probably would have ordered something else.

While I appreciate your frustrations, your new XC40 will be depreciating at alot more than £199 a month when you get it - so to be mobile for that cost is very attractive. Its a max £25 every three months to change insurance so another £8 per month.

You have a £35k car on order. Its small change in the scheme of things.

If you can get the V40 for £199 a month, I would say that is very fair. If you cant, I would be inclined to walk away, Volvo dont deserve your business. Or look at a very special deal on an XC60 to swap to...
