Change of Tyres - Dynamic Calibration

I wonder if someone has some advice on this topic.
There is a tyre centre near me who at the end of last year changed my two front tyres. They offered up a Dynamic Calibration where it was stated a computer is plugged in to make sure everything is aligned and the vehicle is then taken for a test run. They mentioned the camera system, lane assist etc and this also applies to other vehicle makes also.

I have done much research on the subject and to date no one has been able to tell me whether this is a genuine thing or unnecessary. While I don't believe the garage intends to make money for the sake of it this did cost me £212 for the pleasure.

Apparently since I had that done they now offer an additional calibration for vehicles with lane assist computers etc to ensure it works correctly. They told me that it wasn't compulsory but upon agreeing at the time thought it was needed.

So my burning question is, is this an extra charge for nothing where it isn't needed or is there a genuine cause for this action? Has anyone got technical knowledge on this? I have two new tyres needed for the rear soon and while I have laser guided alignment normally are not sure if I want to pay for this extra calibration again unless it is really required.

The only time I've ever seen a recalibration done is after a windscreen replacement. Personally I can't see any reason for it and the garage has made £212 from you. Why don't you phone Volvo and ask them for the price of two tyres and see what they include.

Complete waste of money IMHO. Likewise I only have 4 wheel alignment done when I see uneven tyre wear, have hit something or notice the car isn't steering straight. Otherwise best left alone, not all 4 wheel alignment systems are equal likewise their operators

Thanks guys, yes seems that they did make money out of me. I never had a system like this before, so took it as I needed it. I won't allow that to happen again.

Had my front tyres changed a few months back, just changed the tyres, nothing else offered or done.
