Air con seems not to be working, over in France and it’s 38’ and the wife is giving me ear ache.. When I start up the car D3, on all my previous cars when you turn on air con the pump engages and a sound change in the engine tone etc.. Just checked and head under bonnet and the boss hits the air con switch and nothing. Is there a fuse I can can check to first see if it’s a simple fix, also location of said fuse if there is one.. Or it could be a trip to a garage to see if they can find the problem .. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

It might just need re-gassed. If your car is about 5 years old and has never been re-gassed then it could be that.
But, on 2 of my previous cars re-gassing did not work, one had a leak in the system and required a new condenser, then a new pressure sensor, and the other had a loose drive belt on the compressor which took several visits to finally get diagnosed.
If it only needs re-gassed lots of garages can do this, takes about an hour, and relatively inexpensive.

You can get info on the fuse layout from the Volvo app/website support pages - not knowing your model year i went for 2020 as an example
Fuses under seat

Fuses in engine compartment

Not the most insightful but it might help.

Usually if gas is low there is a “protection switch” to stop the air con running with low pressure.
