They do all the work and they don’t need to drive the car with the system fitted to the XC40. I initially took mine to the main dealer as they offer free repairs but no surprise they said it would need a new screen and recommended if I had it to go through my own insurance. It turns out even the Volvo dealers farm the work out to Autoglass most of the time so with my insurer it cost a total of £75 for a new screen including fitting and all recalibration work as opposed to an informal quote of around £900 plus fitting and recalibration from Volvo.
With regards to thinking the delay means you will get a OEM Volvo screen. Don't hold your breath. There is no guarantee. It varies from insurer to insurer. Very few insist on OEM glass or if they do they charge an extra inflated excess for what is highly likely to be the exact same screen minus the Volvo logo. I did enquire at the time as my car was only 3 weeks old about the possibility of OEM glass being supplied. The guy I dealt with was very sympathetic and I suspect from something he said which involved my original appointment being cancelled at the last minute may have been why a few weeks later mine was fitted with a genuine Volvo screen at no extra cost.
I may have just got lucky but obviously didn’t ask too many questions!!
Interesting, my access is a little more than you state but did opt for 'premium' as it included wipers that needed changing so saved me the job...
