You should have set up your Telekom Hotspot Drive Account when getting the car? I expect you'll get the next AAOS update which doesn't appear to be Model Year specific.

Regarding the WiFi, the router must not have the WPS function enabled, must have a password set and have WPA2 support.

This is handy to know, I’ll disable WPS and try again purely in the name of research

Just to report my findings. My router has "WPA2 Personal" as it's flavour of security and I've disabled WPS on the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands. My XC40 still can't see the WiFi from my house despite pretty good coverage on my driveway where previous cars have connected without issue. It's not really an issue with the in-built SIM, but confusing that the car can see my neighbours WiFi without issue.
