I hired a non plug-in full hybrid for a few days, its a well known brand and have to say its left me astonished. After 728 miles, it averaged 67.4 MPG and spent 62% of the time on electric, that's 451 miles on pure electric without ever the need to plug it in. I was mulling the idea of a twin engine plug in, the one's where you can travel usually no more than 30 miles on electric before an under-powered ICE takes over and/ or you need to find somewhere to re-charge. Our daughter recently changed her 2020 B4 R-Design Pro, 3 years old, 14,000 miles, scuffed alloys x3 otherwise as new. It's a London car and very few seem to escape scraped alloys. New list price was just under 40,000 but paid just over 35,000. Has now acquired a new B3 Ultimate with leather and 20inch wheels. Trade in was 28,500. Seemed almost too good to be true. Unfortunately someone along the way messed up the order and it arrived with blond rather than charcoal leather. Dealer dealt with it very professionally. A new one is on order on identical terms except it will have a 4 year rather than 3 year service contract and she is using the incorrect one until it arrives.

One of the things that put me off the Ultimate was the bigger rims. When washing my Plus yesterday I noticed the tyre on one wheel, 18", had a big scuff on the sidewall (no names! ) which if had been on 19" or bigger would have resulted in a scraped alloy.

I'm a bit confused with it being a non-plug in hybrid on how it can travel so many miles on electric when I assume the battery is only being charged by the engine?

Don't wish to advertise other brands on a Volvo forum. I thought non-plug in hybrids were a bit of a gimmick but not now. The only down side I could tell, it wasn't the quickest 0-60, but more that fast enough.

Why, the rest of us often mention other brands and some have moved to them?

I guess the 10 year warranty is attractive as well?

An underpowered IC engine is an issue but not if it's electric?

It left me a little confused too ChrisLF, as I said, with such small batteries I thought they were a bit gimmicky. My thoughts are, if cars can run ICE to 60+ MPG and 60+% on pure electric with out the need to plug in, why are we facing such dire logistics of only EV's by 2035?
