Pretty sure that is a left over phrase from when the usual 12v battery was referred to as the 'starter battery' as they had a small motorbike style 12v battery for the accessories.

This system changed with the B's, and I can't ever imagine the 48v battery in the B's going flat as it's ONLY used for starting and gets recharged on every braking. Though some have had issues with the 12v battery going flat due to the voltage converter (the generators 48v so this is required to charge the 12v)

Our only "major" fault was when the BCM (Battery charging module?) packed up... Everything worked except for starting! Recovery job, parts had to come from Sweden, off road for a bit less than a week

Certainly other manufacturers refer to the BCM as the Body Control Module, the main control module for the car. Can't say though if Volvo use the same naming convention.

The 12V battery is not a starter, the motor alternator is 48V and also provides assistance to the petrol engine... The 12V battery runs the car sytems, why are you calling the 12V battery a starter battery?

Exactly. That's what it's called the manual Larry, hence my exclamation.
