Hi all,

I've recently purchased a Volvo XC40 T4 2019 with 7200 miles on the display.
The car is decent but there is a strange sound which exists since purchase.

It makes a knocking sound (2-3 times from midpoint to the end) when turning the steering wheel to the right side. Is it a common issue that can be resolved easily or do I need to visit a service centre?

You can watch the video of it from the link below

Many thanks in advance

It's a known fault. Mixture of incorrect torque settings on the suspension top. Can weaken the rubber. Very hard to pinpoint but full lock at slow speeds usually shows it. Get them to do both sides.

Many thanks for your answer. Is it something that I should be concerned about or should I get used to living with it :) ?

You need to get this fixed and have the torque set correctly on both sides. It’s a 10 min visit to a Volvo service.

Agree with eugen61. Always identify What the issue is before deciding to ignore it. Could be a loose wheel!

I reported this since new, but it was intermittent, and until my last visit to the dealer it couldn't be replicated...They are replacing the front strut mounts in ten days, and I told them it was that from the info gathered here...

When I had the problem, i could feel it as well as hear it. It didnt happen as much when wet and alot of people have sprayed the top mounts to "cure" the problem. The dealer had the car for 2 days driving it around and phoned to say they could find nothing. I told them to try parking in their carpark with full lock and a slow speed. They phoned back to say they had found the problem.
They replaced the top mounts and set the torque to different values. 18 months on all good.
Although replaced at a Volvo dealer it didnt go without problems. They left the old bolts from the strut top on the bulkhead. A few days later when going round a roundabout they rattled across the bulkhead, frightened the life out of me. It also frightened the mechanic when i placed them in his hand! A week later i noticed black grease inside the front wheel well. The drive shaft rubber joint was split throwing the moly grease all over the back of the wheel, brake disc and wheel well.
I took it back and said it must have been done when the struts were disconnected. They argued at first but they had a large window into the workshop and they were doing the same job on another xc40. Both suspension legs were spread out unfastened at the top with the drive shafts joints at their limit. I pointed this out and they replaced the unit FOC!
Not been back to the main dealer since. I have services done at a Volvo specialist garage who know and love their Volvo cars. About half the cost, a better service and they do warranty work.

Hi
I recently purchased a 2020 xc40 r design, a Volvo Selekt, after a few days this developed the creaking/clunking noise when turning the steering wheel at slow speed, car has been back into the dealer and they have advised that it's the top suspension mounts, Volvo are aware and are re designing these mounts.
Has anyone heard of this, I was given no indication if timescales, should I live with this until they call me, or insist they replace them with "temporary" replacements.
Thanks

Allegedly the new improved top mounts are due mid October. Its a very common issue
