For information when taking my car into my dealer today for a minor recall I met with both the Service and Sales Manager to discuss a way forward having gone around in circles with Volvo Support.

I was advised that just recently Volvo UK have issued a Technical Bulletin regarding this regen brake noise issue and that an 'update' is expected in quarter 4 of this year. The dealer though was a bit circumspect re the timescales.

I have no axe to grind with my dealer who have always tried to be helpful and although I am frustrated with Volvo Support they can only convey what their systems tell them. It seems to me that Volvo UK have an internal issue with communication between the customer facing Dealers, Volvo Support and Volvo Technical.

On the basis of what I was told I now feel more reassured that Volvo UK have picked up on this and that there is some hope that the problem will be resolved or mitigated.

I am not the sort who would normally get involved with forum sites and the like but in this case I am glad I did. Having the knowledge that others were raising the same issue was genuinely helpful.

Fingers crossed for a fix eh?

I bought a xc40 B4 Ultimate Dark 2.0 in March2023

I too have the issue with the noise when braking - it’s been back to the dealer several times and was told they have not heard of any issues so this forum/chat is reassuring.

I have raised a complaint with Volvo U.K. customer services which was escalated to their executive team 2 months ago but they have done nothing to respond or address the issue. It seems from this thread they do actually know they have a problem.
Like another member, I am concerned about the resale of this car.
I am hoping that I can “reject” the car since it is less than a year old and go and buy something else. This is my first Volvo and I won’t be buying another !

This thread is not convincing me to buy another XC40. It’s a shame because I love my current T4. Maybe I should keep it, as sounds a lot less trouble than the B4.

Obviously it shouldn't make a noise like this, but as JFDIT says over time it does get less intrusive and I've only done a few hundred miles so far. Hopefully Volvo do come up with a fix though to get rid of it completely.

I know I've been very critical of some aspects (hopefully constructive) but I've still got no regrets as it is very nice to drive and goes well. Had to put my foot down leaving an island earlier and it really flew.

I won't be keeping it outside of warranty though!

There lies another issue, I’ll be wanting to keep my next car for 5 years.

You could always extend the warranty of course, I will take one out for the 4th year if I keep it that long.

But that's the quandary with most new cars though now. They are all complicated to varying degrees and doubt I'd want to risk it with any manufacturer.

I did for the 4th year of my T4 on the basis that it was still pretty straightforward though I did get twitchy when the drivers display starting disappearing, though fortunately it sorted itself out.

No such worries with my 9 year old Audi TT I've owned from new as it's all pretty much basic tried and tested technology.

That's a big plus for the Sportage with a 7 year warranty and Toyota even better with 10 years if serviced with them.

Just to add a case to this - my brand new B3 Plus is making a strange screeching noise when lightly braking. Hopefully, it will go away with time...

I have a 23 reg v60 B3 with the 7 speed DCT. Not an XC40 but the same gearbox. Unusual in the v60 as they only used it for about 6 months before the model was canned in the uk.

Whoop. Whoop. Or a harsh white noise sound randomly after coasting and pressing the brake.

I’ve done around 12000 miles since I picked the car up in June, cant say it’s improved, would say the quality of the car is a downfgrade on my same shape 2019 model though. Noticed it on the second day.

Only way Ive found to avoid it is to brush the throttle to restart the engine before braking. Regret buying a 90k service plan with it as I’d have already offloaded it if not - the features removed but the buttons left on the wheel are pretty pathetic but a car that sounds like it’s belching when you brake for over 30k is just unacceptable.

Don't rely on Kia's 7 year warranty, my daughters 5 year old Sportage's engine with 40,000 went bang, piston through block. Full Kia service history, however Kia have refused to pay up, saying it's fair wear and tear! Going to court now. So my advice is to stick to what you know
