Glovebox lock

Hi, We purchased a 2020 XC40 T3 R Design for the wife from a Volvo dealer last year and we got issued with the glove box key which we put in the keyholder at the back of the glovebox. A couple of months later we noticed the glovebox didn't open. The handle has no resistance to it whatsoever so it feels like the latch has broken, or it almost feels like it is locked.
The car is under warranty so we just left it until it's next service. We told our local dealer about the issue when we booked it in for a service but they are saying they need to charge us to look at it because it looks like it could have been damaged as there are some marks from our children's feet touching the glovebox.
I'm sure any of you with young kids are aware of how their stubby legs don't bend over the front of the childseat so they stick forward and their shoes often leave dirty marks on the glovebox.. well our local dealer says that could have caused the damage and it may not be covered under warranty...
Anyway, I was wondering if any kind person could have a look at their XC40 with the glovebox Locked and Unlocked to see if the key barrel being in a horizontal position, as per the attached pic, gives any idea if this has somehow locked itself? If so then it means we can just try and get a replacement key sorted rather than paying them to attempt to break into it..

thanks in advance

Seeing the instructions on here for locking the glovebox suggests that in the horizontal position it is locked...

https://www.volvocars.com/en-th/support ... e-glovebox

This advert on ebay has the lock in the Vertical position.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185515703824 ... TgQAvD_BwE

Would really appreciate it if someone can check their car and confirm/deny my suspicions.

Can't believe that your dealer is blaming a scuff mark, and insisting you pay for investigative work - what is wrong with some dealers. Your car is under warranty - simple, and your dealer should sort it for you under warranty - complain to Volvo UK, they will contact the dealer on you behalf, give you incident reference, and should instruct your dealer to investigate and fix under warranty

On the plus side they did replace the two creaking boot struts under warranty. :D

But I was a bit disappointed when it was in for its £430 service and they called me to say that they have identified that there are additional costs - £144 to do a 'diagnostic' on the glovebox, which cant guarantee they won't cause damage and also a wheel alignment check. I asked why it needs a wheel alignment check, is the tracking out and he said he can't tell me until after he does the check. Seemed like a bit of a money making exercise. I told him that if the tyres are uneven I'll go to the local tyre place who do alignment checks for free... health check says they are within 0.5mm across the tread.
It also says on the health check it requires a brake fluid change. Why would a family car need it's brake fluid changing after 2 years?

Dealer has actually called me for a check up to see if the car is ok after the service. I mentioned about the glovebox still being shut and told him that it feels like it could just be locked somehow, I asked if they had a master key or how I can get a replacement key. I read on a forum that they got a replacement key for $90 so don't want to pay the dealer £144 to 'investigate' the issue if it is locked and I can just order a key for £90. Didn't seem to know anything about it being a different key. They are checking the system tomorrow to see if it lists an additional key code as well as the door key.
Still not sure why the lad doing the service who had a quick look at the glovebox didn't just go and compare it to the identical XC40 that was in on the same day. Now that I've mentioned the locking barrel position to them on the phone it would have been nice if the dealer could just go and look at one of the other XC40s on the forecourt but thought I'd register here to see if someone could do a check of the locking barrel position.

I've seen another video on youtube of an interior and it looks to have the lock barrel Vertically as do a few on autotrader. I'm now pretty sure our glovebox is just locked. The wife doesn't know how to do it and the 8yr old swears he hasn't played around with any key inside the glovebox though so not sure if it has locked itself somehow when being closed.

...If they manage to get an additional key for you, take the car to them to pick it up, and let them unlock the glovebox. If the existing key is still in its storage position in the box, I'd be inclined to kick off a bit. ;)

Sorry - slightly off topic, although I have an XC40 on order. Your comment "On the plus side they did replace the two creaking boot struts under warranty" - are these the power struts? I have a creaky Q3 and wondered if it might be the cause. Audi profess complete innocence. Any help appreciated (if for the wrong brand!)

Absolutely loath main dealerships that act like this - tracking can't be out if only 0.5mm wear discrepancy across the width of the tyre tread, the camber in the road will most likely be the cause of that - and as for changing the brake-fluid at two years - no - the brake fluid should be checked for moisture content, and as part of the service, after two years. You seem to explain the situation in a way that this dealership is your only choice? - Find another dealership.
@steveg999 - guess the boot struts are the rubber boots at the top of the front suspension shock-absorbed, and a few have had problems with this - chuckled at that idea that changing something under warranty felt on the "plus side", if it made me feel like that, then differently would not go there.

Hi Both, regarding the boot struts, yes it was the powered lifters on the tailgate. The right hand side one started making a creaking noise when opening and closing like it was jamming inside the telescopic part or some teeth were grinding. Sounded like it was going to fail imminently. Fortunately it lasted until the service and they replaced both. Sounds like it may be a common issue as they managed to get some ordered in that afternoon and fit them, but did mean the car was 3 hours later than expected. Thought the struts would have lasted more than 2 years! Think they are quite costly out of warranty.

Contact Audi UK if your local audi dealer is being rubbish. I've got an Audi myself and have had better treatment from them although I haven't had any warranty issues just the servicing. Although they do seem to mess up the service indicator timer on the infotainment system everytime. (as did Skoda on a previous car, must be a VAG thing)
Interestingly my second 'inspection service' on the Audi RS3 was similar to the price of this second year XC40 'major' service that we have just had done. I wasn't expecting Volvo to be charging like Audi do on their RS models.

Regarding this Volvo dealer. We didn't purchase the car from them but we got it from one of their other branches 1hour south of us as we had specific spec requirements which included the 360 cameras that the wife depends on and a manual. So we thought we would service it at the same name dealer but the local one to get a consistent stamp in the book and also thought we may end up using that same dealer to upgrade cars in a couple of years. Tempted now to use a different named dealer that is a bit further to travel north next time but will see how they handle 'glovebox gate'. They did ring me today but I missed the call due to work.

It's a shame we need to keep these main dealer stamps to preserve our cars valuation.
We have a local Audi Specialist that would provide a much better level of service and cheaper prices than taking it to Audi and paying a fortune for the apprentice to get on it.

Surely someone on here has a model with the glovebox lock installed :D

It’s a know fault and will be fixed for free as long as the car is under warranty.
