Hi,

I have a first edition XC40 with 20" wheels and need new front brake pads.

What size pads will I need? I can see 15", 16" or 18" listed online.

The size of wheel wouldn’t dictate the pad size.

Brake pads are not sold by size, BA777. A parts supplier will want to know your vehicle details to get you the right ones for your car.

As said, the parts supplier will be able/should be able to identify which pads you need. It might be that all the pads are the same or it might be that the pads are a different size due to spec of the car (a T3 might have smaller discs, and therefore smaller pads than a T5 for example).

I discovered that the Rotor size (diam in mm) is stamped on top of the brake caliper. It's 3-digits like 296 or 322. The rotor part number stamp is 8-digits. Same goes with the rear rotors, though they're typically smaller diameter.

When ordering the brake pads, the size should correspond to the rotor size/diameter.

The Brembo parts catalogue is very useful for such enquiries - i've never found any errors in it. There are two options for front pads on the D4, dependent upon whether you have a Teves or Bosch system
