I took delivery of my new XC 40 a couple of weeks ago. Its an R Design Pro in Fusion Red with 20" wheels. I can't actually remember what I took the original test drive in but I'm quite convinced that my new car has a significantly firmer ride than the test drive one. This is the only negative with the car in my opinion. I'm wondering if 18" wheels would improve the ride. Has anyone any experience in this respect. Am I right in saying that the R Design has a firmer suspension than the Momentum or Inscription? I would welcome your opinions. Many thanks.

I have a T5 Inscription, and insisted on the 18" wheels, and can truly tell you the ride is really smooth! Dealer inflated to 44 psi, placard stated 33 and I adjusted to 34 psi, reset the TPM and its really nice and smooth. Bottom line you are correct with respect to a slightly firmer ride, but the amount of rubber between tire and road is the key to the soft ride! After ^ BMW's with low profile tires I finally wised up...
Not sure I can comment from experience on 20" on the R-Design but yes, the R design has firmer suspension than the other models. I can certainly vouch for the smoothness of the ride with 18" on the Inscription. Do you have 4-C suspension? as this may have a bearing on things and it is possible that the car you test drove was fitted with it.

Thank you for your feedback Bobsap ad Balmoral. Ive booked a trial with the dealer on 18" wheels hopefully on an R Design. Will see if that helps. Maybe should have gone with Incsriptioh but loved the Fusion Red with he black roof.

Sounds like you had a similar dilemma to me - I really wanted the red on an Inscription but in the end I let comfort win over colour. I'm still envious of red XC40s when I see them though!Countrymusicman wrote: ↑Sun Sep 16, 2018 1:40 pm Thank you for your feedback Bobsap ad Balmoral. I'm on 19" wheels and find the ride quality is really good. I test drove the 20" wheels and there's definitely a difference

I test drove on 20" wheels and found the ride to be very comfortable, much less crashy than a Honda Civic or Mini Countryman.

Had an X1 2017 on 18 and now with the redesign 20 ride is much much better and less crashy. Opted for the 20 because they are nicer and wider Than the 18 and 19s. Ride could be better, but hey you can’t have everything. Anyway I’m very happy with the choice.
