I have taken out a three year service plan when purchasing the vehicle but have just had two thoughts.
1. When the vehicle is serviced by the Volvo dealer, how do I know what he has checked, toped up, updated etc.
2. If after the three year service plan runs out and I consider using a non Volvo garage for a service, what is the extent of the work I am going to ask them to do?
With my previous vehicle, a Hyundai SantaFe, it was possible to get a service chart itemising the work to be checked, replaced etc at various mileages/years.
Are any owners using a non Volvo garage for servicing or are these vehicles so sophisticated that it is essential to use a Volvo agent?

Can't be sure of what's included, but I'm sure it'll be on the internet somewhere!

As much as car manufacturers tell us how sophisticated modern day cars are, provided it's a petrol or diesel, they haven't changed much in over a 100 years. There's levels to check, pads to check, oil to change, filters to check change (or simply ignore!). As far as the electronics most popular high street mechanic shops (eg Halfords, KwikFit) have the necessary technology. And most "back street" establishments either have it or can buy it in.
Many will fit compliant Volvo parts so you don't necessarily have to go to Volvo during the warranty period. Although if you've paid upfront it's in your interest to go Volvo.

You will get the software updates with a volvo service which, i guess, most likely will not get from a 3rd party garage.

I paid for the 5 years service, and will try out my local volvo dealer and if I am not happy go to a different one (I am lucky to have a couple close enough to consider using).

I have had two software updates on my xc40 in the last year.. One at the 3m check and another when the boot handle was replaced. So if you haven't had those updates then they will likely be due for your car.
