Windscreen chips

I'm going to have another word with insurance tomorrow to see if they will let me have it repaired at the dealer - want them to see it - I've not had anything hit the window even and because the crack STARTS from under the smoked section covered by the plastic it can't be a stone chip and must be a fault. The other thing is if you rub your fingernail over the crack its not through to the outside, its cracked on the inside.

I had the same thing last year, crack appeared overnight and then started to spread across the windscreen, took it into the dealer and they said that they could not see a chip or anything that would cause the crack.

They said they would get in touch with Volvo UK, I emailed Volvo UK directly and explaining that the dealer could not see a cause and that the it was acceptable for this to happen to a new car.

To give then credit Volvo UK agreed and instructed the dealt to replace the windscreen FOC.

Hi all,

This has happened to me this morning on the way to work and it will need replacing.
My insurance company have said that the windscreen will be replaced like for like so it will be the exact same windscreen but won’t have ‘Volvo’ written on the window.

Does this matter at all?

Thanks,

Tom

I haven't had chips or cracks to the severity that some have on here but what I have noticed is that the outer glass must be rather soft as I've picked up two tiny chips on my windscreen in 8 months already. It is only the outer glass and I would describe both chips as more like very shallow scratches.

Both incidents were from glancing blows (almost inaudible from inside the car) from a stone thrown up by the car in front and the glass is only slightly marked on the outside.

Question is, how or where would I get these chips sorted as they're too small really for any sort of major repair work IMO? I also worry that with the state of our roads it may be a futile exercise to try and keep the windscreen pristine.

This is worrying...mine is the same horizontal crack from A pillar a week into owning and driving one, I noticed a crack. Contacted dealership straight away they asked me to go through my insurance. I refused to do so. Brand new car with less than 300 miles to the clock, on pcp, not a chip but a crack. I read my Consumer’s right to them and now windscreen replacement is in order for next week.
It is a pity most people have had to fork out excess through their insurance. A good quality product wouldn’t have so many defects this early.
Please people, stop going through your insurance, Volvo is fully aware of the problem, so go to dealership or Volvo direct.

Just for information, Autoglass UK can now do the calibration in house. I had a stone chip on my windscreen, which quickly spread to a long crack.

Autoglass replaced the windscreen this Saturday (with a Volvo original part) and did the calibration. The whole thing took about 2:30 hours and everything works fine. In fact, I think that after the calibration pilot assist keeps me more in the middle of the lane than it used to!

Only paid £75 excess and the process was very straightforward.

Dealers always tend to say it's not a fault!

As there is no stone damage I'd say that it is a stress crack and could be due to a faulty installation at the factory/damage to the edge of the screen and happened when the screen was put under a small amount of bending stress when the car is moving and flexing. They can also be caused by temperature variances and pressure.

How long have you had your cars?

That's good to know. I've got a second, larger chip that I need to sort and have a feeling they'll say a new screen is required.

Mine is heated too - is yours?

Not had a chip for about 10yrs, then had 2 in this car in 13 months.
