It worked out at 34 mpg in the morning and 33.6 in the evening. It's not just that Volvo On Call told me these values, but I refilled the same amount of diesel fuel at the gas station near my home.
I'm not that satisfied with 34 mpg for a D4 engine, but I blame the Pirelli Scorpion Winter tires on that. Hope I'll get better results with Continental summer tires soon.
With such a high average speed (120-130 km/h) I’m not surprised by your fuel consumptions. Due to lower aerodynamics of the car, driving above 100 km/h tends to punish mileage much more compared to a sedan. My T4 FWD driven at 130km/h (80 mph) returns 8,2 l/100 (34,5 mpg), whereas at 100 km/h returns 5,8l/100km (48,7 mpg).

Unfortunately, summer tires won’t decrease significantly consumption figures, but higher outside temperature will surely make a difference...

Don’t get your hopes up too high, 34mpg is pretty much what I’m getting at the moment on the original tyres, 10.2k miles on the clock...

Rifleman - another name I remember from first time around! Just checked my D4 records from 2018. I averaged 40.9 mpg over the 6 months of ownership. Mixed usage over all types of road. Just over 4000 miles

Hi PJ, welcome back.

I use the “Fuelly” app to record fuel usage. Looking through my records on the app my overall average is 37mpg, best ever was 49.5mpg. All of my over 40mpg records were on long distance , mainly motorway/dual carriageway trips. Rest are shorter trips with 70/30 split of rural and urban respectively and are in the low 30s mpg. All records are from full tank to full tank.

Considerably higher consumption than my previous two cars but they were 2.0l diesel saloons with manual gearbox. As I have low annual mileage the mpg is not so much of a problem for me but disappointing non the less,,,

Thanks for the welcome! I always enjoyed the chat on this forum.

I must look into using Fuelly. However, now I am running a T5 my expectations are quite low, so I think I may just enjoy the ride and ignore the numbers 🥳

BTW, I've been using an iPhone app called "Road Trip" for a decade now (on my old car and now on my XC 40) and I highly recommend it. It even has tire size correction, so you can get more accurate mpg based on real distances and not based on numbers written on a car dashboard.

Or good old brim to brim, divide miles driven by fuel added, repeat a few times for accurate figures.

I have a spreadsheet dating back to 2005, no need for these apps!

How do you manage brim to brim with the XC40's double flap filler? Surely you don't go off the auto pump click off?

Thanks for the comparison, Eugene! I know the mileage depends on speed, as well as on the terrain. I was able get 44 mpg (6,4 l/100) on a coast-to-coast-via-mountain trip with avg. cruising speed of 110-130 km/h (68-80 mph), with three people in the car. On my way back D4 AWD returned 7,2 l/100 (39 mpg) because obviously every car prefers short up the hill ride first and then long downhill ride, as the opposite to long uphill ride and then short downhill.
I was also able to get 6,8 l/100 (41,5 mpg) for the whole tank after driving two weekends on the countryside, and my "personal best" was two day ago with 6,0 l/100 (47 mpg) after 40 miles downhill highway ride at 120km/h (75 mph) and two people in the car, during the night and temperature around 0℃ so I'm not complaining.
After all, my old Peugeot with 120 hp petrol engine used to have pretty much similar consumptions, and you simply can't compare those cars with XC 40. ❤
