You are absolutely right Boomer. Additionally tyre brand & tread pattern can have a bigger impact than wheel size.
XC40 T5 FE; Bright Silver; 20” Alloys; Power Folding Tow-bar.

Whatever you do see if you can find a way to drive a D4 with the larger wheels to make sure you will be happy with the ride and handling difference that 20” or 21” wheels will make. I test drove a 20” FE but the dealer suggested that the 19” wheels whilst not so stylish were far more practical and absorb the rough road surfaces far better than the larger wheels.
D4 AWD First Edition Crystal White. 19” Wheels. No headlamp wash. Delivered 8th June after 16 weeks.
What do dealers know? Mine said that there was diddly squat difference between 19's and 20's. But agree only test driving (for you the person that will be driving it "every day") will be the answer. Does feel that this is all off topic for the OP though.NKXC40 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 8:40 am Whatever you do see if you can find a way to drive a D4 with the larger wheels to make sure you will be happy with the ride and handling difference that 20” or 21” wheels will make. To be fair, given your vehicle is with 19" and no headlamp washers (same as mine), 20" weren't an option unless at best you were happy to wait 6 months+. The comment smacks of dealer BS I'm afraid.NKXC40 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 8:40 am Whatever you do see if you can find a way to drive a D4 with the larger wheels to make sure you will be happy with the ride and handling difference that 20” or 21” wheels will make. The FE's drive just as good on 20's as 19's (and the 20's look far nicer IMO). However, if I was the OP I'd be thinking differently. For example, are the 20's they're interested in the ones FE's were advertising as a zero cost option? If so, then I'd say they'd be mad as a) they;ll be paying for something that was previously free and b) it will impact insurance as is then classed as a modification
The 21's on offer look very nice but OTT for me - too bling. But each to their own. I wasn't a fan of the 19's personally at first (was gutted couldn't have the 20's) but I've warmed to them massively and its a very comfortable ride

I've tested both - both 19" and 20" on a D4. I found both to be acceptable but the 20" seem to have more secondary 'bounce' on uneven roads in standard comfort mode. I think the 20" wheels suit the vehicle very well and I'm not a fan of 21" Volvo optional ones - they look cartoonishly huge on the car to me. Matter of personal taste.
Practically, the 19" are probably the best as the OH has already managed to slightly kerb one of the 20s...perils of lower profile tyres...
