Hi everyone
My car a bp4 fwd new from November 21 and completed 6100 miles.
Noticed on the car today ridges on the edges of all the brake discs that looks to be the result of wear, I don’t use auto brake because I find the brakes too grabbing in low speed manoeuvre and I don’t drive the car hard or break heavy
Interesting it’s on all four discs, pictures enclosed, any comments appreciated

Discs on the XC40 do seem to lip at a low mileage, especially the rear discs, which would normally indicate a harder compound on the pad but the pads wear quickly too so guess both are on the soft side - the edge of your discs look heavily corroded too - maybe too much winter salt?

@JFDIT - and if you are right, wonder why they seem to cost an eye watering price to replace!! ;)

They are poor Quality because they are not covered under the warranty and are a cash cow for the dealers IMHO.

Not just a problem on XC40s. My last car was an XC60 and the rear disks had to be replaced prematurely (front brakes were still like new). However, as they’re not covered by the warranty I didn’t feel obliged to have them replaced with Volvo parts at a Volvo main dealer. Instead, I went to an independent Volvo specialist who fitted quality disks and pads for around £230.

Since asbestos (rightly) was removed from pads - and Volvo were the first to do so - discs wear much more, it's usually replace the discs every other set of pads. I was working for Volvo in the 80's and it raised the same issues then. However, the change at alternate pad replacement is pretty much the norm for every car I've had since the mid 90's

Hi
Thanks for replies, I am going to the local dealer for them to check the thickness of the discs, I understand the minimum disc thickness is 10.7 mm. I am taking it before the 1st service as I think that they will have less opportunity to come back with the wear and tear waffle. If the discs are anywhere near the minimum thickness after just 6000 miles they clearly are either faulty or not fit for purpose.

Your discs don't look anywhere near the limit, maybe you can have a grip on the excessive corrosion at less than a year old but not the wear in my opinion
