For anyone interested I've put together a simple Excel spreadsheet showing the savings to be had by choosing diesel over petrol on the XC40 D4/T5.
If you disagree with the £/l or mpg figures just enter your own in the yellow boxes.

The difference in residuals has to be quite high to overcome the extra cost of petrol, assuming your not interested in the extra power from the petrol engine...

Your analysis is very dependent on the mpg numbers used. I went from an XC70 D5 geartronic to an Audi SQ5 3.0V6 Turbo petrol and my average fuel consumption fell by about 9 mpg. Now I imagine the XC40 will be better than the XC70 but 45mpg looks hopeful unless you do lots and lots of long journeys. 30 for the T5 sounds reasonable for their reported numbers - but many are doing shorter journeys / lower overall mileage and so will be able to do better on a run...

I'd suggest 10mpg difference in like for like use.

And well worth the difference to get the longer rev range and better refinement in my humble opinion. Note everyone will agree but I only do 10k miles a year and the £10 a week it costs me is money well spent to me for the aural delight of the petrol engine (especially in my SQ5!!)

Sorry for the OCD like question but shouldn’t your 3 year and 4 year columns also include the initial price difference?
Two XC40s - so far! Inscription Pro T5 AWD Auto - Glacier Silver/Blond/21”, fully loaded, from Jan thro Sep 2021. Polestarred. :) Also one of the first FEs - a D4 AWD Auto - Bursting Blue/Charcoal/20" from Mar thro Aug 2018. Also Polestarred. :o

I agree there are a lot of factors involved so each to his own.
Personally I tend to prefer the extra range the diesel gives, I do a fair bit of mileage through rural France and diesel is cheaper than petrol over there by the way.

My Skoda Superb L&K 2.0 Diesel returns an avg 45mpg on my daily 15mile round trip commute through Nottingham. On trips to France I average around 62 to 65 mpg. It's got gradually better during the two years I've owned it.
