Replaced many clutches, often as a matter of course when purchasing a second hand car - jack the car, unfasten the bell-housing, remove the clutch, centralise new one, fit new release bearing and re-connect bell-housing - two hours and approx £80. Today duel-mass flywheels (even the technology behind them is a rubbish idea, never mine the problems) and - that will be £1600 thank you - and this is often called progress by many a folk??
I assume you’d rather we still had starting handles and drum brakes

Oh yes, drum brakes = no break dust all over the wheels and then encrusted and baked on needing aggressive solutions to remove - tick that box. Oh yes, starting handles = stuck in mud or a rut, get the starting handle out and "crank" the car out - tick that box too. Anything else?

Rear wheel drive yes, not sure that was so easy on Front wheel drive cars. My first car, a BMC 1300 was a pig to do. But yes a later Cortina was RWD and was a very quick job.

Buying cars I always used to look under the bonnet, see where everything was. These days don't bother, even if you could see under all the plastic covers you wouldn't have a clue and little chance of fixing it even if you were so inclined.

I have exactly the same age car and my clutch went tonight only done 9,000 miles and like you had a device only about two month ago with no issues. Had to ring RAC as not drivable at all, back to garage tomorrow, will see what they say. It's certainly not driving style!

New XC40, thank you and that will be 40k+ sir/ madam - oh the clutch has gone sub 10k miles, that will be £1600 sir/ madam - really. To often we are told that a clutch is a fair wear and tear item - well in my opinion nothing fair about a £1600 outlay for a clutches that have done less than 10k - in my view that's more like - not fit for purpose.

Is there any update with your clutch? Mine went last night on the motorway, my car is just a year old - 17k miles. I have had cars for years and years and never had a clutch burnt out. They have said they nees authorisation to strip it and access whether it’s a manufacturing fault or me as to who pays. Surely it’s obviously a manufacturing fault on such a new car?! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks libby

Found this whilst searching for other stories!
My XC40 D3 manual is just under 3 years old, has covered 38k miles. Weekend before last was a bit sticky getting into reverse.
Following week drove 200 miles up north no issue, was about 2/3 way home and came off slip road when the clutch was stuck down. Managed to pull it up with my toe and struggle into 6th. When I accelerated above about 2000rpm the gears seemed to slip to 4th and revs increase for a split second. Got to next roundabout and only just got it into gear to make it home (clutch sticking again with every use).
Next morning no chance of getting it into gear so recovered into Volvo.
5 days later they've said clutch totally burnt out. No manufacturing fault found apparently and claim they've never replaced another clutch on one like this.
Now I've driven well over 20 years. In that time had about 10 years of 50k miles a year and never had any clutch issues before. From here I can see that seems unlikely!
He couldn't give any suggestions as to why else it would've burnt out. Asked if I tow, I don't even have a tow bar! And usually just me travelling so certainly not overloaded.
Volvo refusing to replace under warranty. My thought is the car isn't fit for purpose. Lex autolease are refusing to cover the repairs under my maintenence plan.
So I'm stuck with no car, a year left on my lease and the prospect of a ridiculous bill.
Any advice?

My clutch has just burnt out. on a 2020 XC40 less than 3 years old with 36K on the Clock. The dealership has advise that Volvo will not do this under warranty as it it down to 'Driving style'
I have been driving for over 25 years and have never had to change a clutch. I have had cars over with over 200,000 miles all on the original clutch so this is simply not true.
There must be a fault or the XC40 is not fit for purpose.

The dealership has quoted me over £2400 for a new clutch and flywheel.

So I am also stuck with a year left on lease and this rip of bill

I'm not sure where to take this.
Has anyone got any advise ?

Get it fixed at a clutch specialist and get them to do a condition report on the old unit. If the findings are failure rather than wear and tear take it up with Volvo and post your findings on here
