Cheers Deeg. I might well end up with something similar if ideally shorter (but USB A to USB C) depending on how the bigger of our two phones sits easier in the car.

I would not recommend shorter, by the time you fit the cable into the clamp and run it around the cubby hole you end up with

Just came across this, looks like it might be useful for Android:

Worth keeping an eye on. Similar units so far have all been wireless iOS, but wired android - so this is an advance.

Meanwhile, with the right "handed" and right angled cable, I've got the neatest AA fitting I've had in 3 cars with it. And the phone is kept charged whilst it's handing over Waze, Amazon Music etc.

But definitely one to watch ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

If you need to plug your phone in to charge it anyway then a wireless dongle is pointless. I do actually have a wireless CarPlay adaptor and it works well but then again I have an iPhone 13 Pro so getting a full day of charge or even several hours of driving with Waze and Music streaming isn't really a problem but if you are having to connect a cable then you may as well save your money.

My car sadly wasnโ€™t specified with wireless charging and apparently the Volvo wireless charger can not be retrofitted so I fitted the Tesla Model 3 dual charger which looks and works great. Given that I believe many Android-based phones also has wireless charging this means these users now also have access to a fully wireless setup, like those of us with iPhones.

I'd agree the dynamics change radically if you *also* have a wireless charging pad. My Pixel supports it but the car itself was on the line when we reserved it and we couldn't add anything, other than the dealer fit Android Auto. So it wasn't an option. For the longer runs I'll need to keep the phone charged so for now I'm happy with the neat setup pictured above.

Another option coming here in the "wireless AA" category. Motorola (actually a Chinese coy licensing the name) are bringing out their MA1, styled like a Chromecast.

UK prices/reviews still to come. I like the look of it, but still feel personally that as my car doesn't have wireless charging (workarounds are available, I know) I may as well just plug my Pixel into the Smartphone Integration socket.
