Ah yes the old Alfa's - when I was young we had old car's that we had to maintain to keep going - car's like the old Alegro etc, or as it was better known, the Allagro - anyway - often we stripped the engines down and re-built them for extra performance etc - the upshot was we were made very aware of all the moving parts inside an engine and the need for all those parts to bed-in for longevity of the engine - today the engines are far far better built and tolerances/ oils are exceptional but the vast amount of moving parts remain generally the same, and in my view all still need bedding-in gently - and when they are not, you can get uneven/ premature wear that's often in the form of cylinder-to-ring seal leading to excessive oil consumption, and why I would not contemplate an ex-demo where you can just imagine each outing is a trial of what the car can (or can't) do, especially the engine - poor thing!!!

Hi all. Just catching up on your responses.

Interesting point @Greggspies, if the oil level indicator on the car status page is just the min/max, youd never fill above the maximum anyway.
I have a vague recollection of checking this screen, not long after we got the car and it showed pretty much a full bar.

I luckily managed to drive past my local volvo specialist near brighouse and he had some leftover oil of the correct type that i was able to purchase as i was concerned about driving the car with an oil warning on.
Added a litre and went for a drive to allow the digital dipstick to do another reading. the marker moved up to about half way, the warning no longer appearing.

To be clear, there was no oil light on, so its not an oil pressure issue. It was a low oil warning on the middle of the dash that requested i add a litre of oil

I've not experienced having to add oil this soon on a relatively new car and ive had so called "unreliable" Alfa's and Fiats for majority of my time driving.

Tempted to get back in touch with the dealership i got the car from, but i dont really think theres much that they will say other than to bring it down for them to have a poke around

the car wasnt ex-demo as such, some dealerships have staff schemes where they have a car for 6 months and then it goes into the approved used market, thats what this car was as far as the info we have. My previous 4 cars were on the same thing but with BMW as my OH worked there

Glad it's sorted for now, Danny. Modern oil changes are done by measuring the new oil in, as unlike with a dipstick, you can't put a bit in at a time until it's full, which is why you mustn't add oil until you are asked to, to prevent overfilling. With a litre added you can check how many miles you get until the message comes up again (complicated by not all those miles being engine driven) It does sound as though it's using more than it should though.

Is the Huddersfield dealership where you brought it from - as I would only take it to them as they are the only ones responsible, and accountable, should there be a serious problem?

Any work would be covered by Volvo's warranty so it shouldn't much matter which dealer. I would use the one who showed the most enthusiasm.

Yeah it was them.
I'd rather they took a look at this stage. Given how long I've had the car.

Understand what you say gregspies but when it comes to possible serious repairs or even rejection - if you take it to another dealership you may start the "blame game" - been there and got the T-shirt - when purchased from a dealership, always take it there first when problems arise - your contract is with them and they are the ones accountable - Volvo will always be there for support, and if needed, may even apply pressure to resolve situations, but dealerships are independent businesses regardless of having Volvo above their doors.

Cars booked in for a more thorough inspection. 6th October.
Bought a spare 1 litre of oil just in case it drops again.
Their words, "worst case its a new engine, but it might just be the filter"
