Swipe the centre display from left to right and several installed apps appear in a horizontal band at the bottom. A selected app can be accessed by tapping it. Elsewhere, the download centre lists installed applications but this screen is not touch sensitive apart from the box to uninstall a particular app. In my car there is an app for Yelp which does not appear in the horizontal display. What should I do to activate it (not sure that I need it but it would be useful to know)?

You need to have internet connectivity (e.g. through Bluetooth) active and connected through your phone or similar. As soon as that is active, all the inactive icons, such as Yelp become active

Not so, I'm afraid. I have the internet connected through the P-SIM in the boot and this provides all the other expected functions such as Weather, WikiLocal etc but not Yelp for some reason.

I believe I read Yelp was finished in Volvo's? Don't hold me to it though..

That would make sense. I’ve found that if you Google for it you get some odd and uninformative results.
