Replacement tyres / puncture repair.

Evening All

My XC 40 is leased including servicing and tyres.

6000 miles in puncture warning light came on, did the usual, pumped it up but 24hrs later it was on again.

Rang my lease company who put me straight into ATS. gave all the details of the car and tyre and opted to have the van come to my work instead of going to the ATS branch.

Guy in the van turns up as promised and proceeds to just put a new tyre on. The old one was wearing but had plenty of life in it.

I asked him why he wasn’t attempting to mend it? He simply said it’s an electric car it has foam in the tyre, he showed me a foam ring on the inside.

That was it . . One new Michelin and 3 part worn Continentals?

He showed me a screw which was in the old tyre, right in the centre so I think would have mended?

Ultimately not my concern but a hybrid car is supposed to be helping the planet except you can’t mend punctures?

Anyone else had this?

It's not the hybrid nature stopping the tyre repair, but the gunge used to sort it previously

Tyre had not been touched previously?

If it has foam inside it's previously been repaired by the foam canister supplied in lieu of a spare wheel.

The only people that benefit from a hybrid are the tax man and your company.

Continental do a specific range of tyres for EVs featuring noise-suppressing foam inside:

More on the EV car tyres: https://www.greencarreports.com/news/11 ... rent-tires

Whilst specialist EV tyres are a thing, they are by no means essential. Continental even push their standard EcoContact 6 as having the desired characteristics: https://www.continental-tires.com/car/t ... icle-tires

I'd be interested to know what your original Contis were and what Michellin is the replacement. And also whether other T5 Hybrid owners have standard or EV-specific tyres?

Yes that sounds more like it.

Yes they were Eco Contact 6 tyre.

Been replaced with a Michelin Lattitude Sport 3.

As you say the foam he showed was not the gunk from a can but a ring of black sound deadening foam on the inside.

To be fair, driving an XC40 hybrid is saving me a small fortune :)

It sounds like you had one of the volumetric tyres fitted, I had the same but sadly for me it was 1500 miles in, the foam ‘get you home kit’ on that true type is useless, as it can’t get to the leak, ATS didn’t have any foam tyres so I ended up just getting a normal tyre installed, it has made no difference to noise or handling.

Could you elaborate please, it would interesting to know?

What's the real world MPG average you get over an extended period? Not a good single run, but say over its life so far.
