Yes, trade in D3 for a D4.

The D3 has the same engine as the D4, just in a different state of tune, so I'm sure there will be a software upgrade somewhere which will do the same job.

However, it will likely invalidate any warranty left on the vehicle and your insurance too, unless you declare it to them.

As said, the safest way is to trade it in for a 'proper' D4.

No, but you can add Polestar optimization to D3 and gain around 10% in power output. You can check details here: https://engineered.polestar.com/uk/model-selector

Hi All
thanks for your thoughts/input, I thought it might be an easy option, I think I'll just buy electric for my next purchase, next year.

thanks again Ronnnie

I thought D3 and D4 are different engines until I compared the CO2, mileage, etc. Then a Volvo used car dealer told me these are two similar engines meaning D3 is D4 but with limitations. You don't see that when buying a new car, but if you take a look at used XC40, you'll notice that you can find D3 and D4 at similar prices.
I wanted to buy a D3 and ended up with 2018 D4 AWD and I'm pretty satisfied with the result. I know my next is going to be an electric, but for the next couple of years it's D4. Did you consider getting an used XC40 D4 before that electric one?
