Ah ok. Since the shipping of the one I linked to is taking forever, I'm considering to go for this instead, as it looks to have a bit more different tools that may come in handy. In general seems to be a big market for these things, but haven't been able to find them in our local stores.

Thanks PP1981. Have had a look at the link and although the chap who did this is in America it can no doubt be done over here.

Changing the existent speakers should not be a problem, however adding new speakers in the HK empty slots found in the rear doors and pillars will be tricky. There are no cables there and the new speaker channels have to be software activated in the amplifier. I wonder if a local car audio service has the necessary access / software to do it on a Volvo XC40. Please keep us posted if you manage to make the upgrade.

Sounds highly speculative.

I'd be fairly certain the HK amp is a completely different unit, seeing that it has a greater output + Pro Logic processing.

Front & rear separation is already there, as evidenced by the fader controls - I would have thought that a car audio specialist would be able to bin the tweeters from the top of the rear doors and install a pair of speakers that work nicely together on the existing rear channels in each of the rear doors. Yes, you can forget the surround channels but wiring for the extra speakers in the rear doors shouldn't be a problem.

Be a question for the specialist but, the fader controls would probably be more indicative than representative but......they're not exactly that representative to start with!!

That’s exactly what I thought too, but the car audio specialist said it’s definitely not recommended to simply add a new speaker by binning wires with the existing tweeter. Would be nice to hear other specialist’s opinion about adding speakers in the rear doors.

Here’s another opinion explaining the limitations for aftermarket audio upgrade: “Adding a real subwoofer and better aftermarket speakers is really about all you can do. XC40 audio system is a fiber optic system called MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) and all data is transmitted by light via fiber optics. This results in sound free from electrical interference. That is a good thing since you don't get the whine you sometimes get in other audio systems in cars that pick up interference from the alternator and other electrical components in the car. However, it is a bad thing, because a lot of stereo installation shops have no idea how to work with this set-up and will mess your car up pretty bad.” https://www.xc40forum.com/threads/ster ... post-12274
