So do you need to go and buy a contract SIM card of some description?

I'm assuming some cheap data plan?

Thanks

You can, but there are some reasonably priced data only SIMs available:

Ah okay thanks so if you link up your phone to the car using Bluetooth there's no need or advantages to have a dedicated SIM.

I'm just thinking for example things like volvo on call, e.g. Pre-heating car, checking if its locked etc. Would that not need a SIM in the car as there's be no phone connected when the engine is off?

It’s been a while since I last played with VOC but it was always my understanding it would need its own SIM to provide full functionality. I’ve already ordered a Three 2yr SIM ready for when my ‘40 arrives.

If you just wanted to use Spotify, traffic data, etc, while in the car, connectivity via your phone would be fine.

VOC has its own sim as someone has said but if you insert a SIM card in the card slot it the uses this instead.
See below info from manual

cars equipped with Volvo On Call*, it is pos- sible to establish an Internet connection via the
car modem and a personal SIM card (P-SIM).
When the car is connected to the Internet via the car modem, Volvo On Call services will use this connection.

States 4G/LTE speeds on the website but I haven’t run a speedtest yet to verify.

Thanks Tux R40, would have been shocked if it was still 3g.
