My salesman handled the tough bit (payment) and passed me over to a product specialist (from the service department) to run through features and set-up. Shame the sales people don't know the cars better but.....that's just the way it is.
If you're nervous with it being your 1st new car, remember you're spending a lot of money, you're the customer and, as such, should lead rather than being led.
Two things definitely worth considering:
1) When salesperson invites you to have a (quick) look around car, say politely "I'd like to be thorough, could you leave me with it for 20 minutes?"
2) Ask "Is there anything I need to be aware of? Has there, for instance, been any transit damage that's been repaired?" A dealer has no legal obligation to reveal that a scuff has been repaired (as long as it's as good as new) but they are obliged to answer you honestly if you're bold enough to ask.
Re. point 2) - Each to their own on this one. If car looks perfect & you've been waiting months - do you really want to know? Hopefully, you knew the car was arriving anyway & you had a stroll around the compound after the car unloaded off the transporter.

Must say my handover was at the minimalist end. Apart from paying and spending 15 minutes saying no to all the additions he tried to sell me! Then it was its over there go and check everything looks fine to you followed by him driving it out of showroom and standing while I adjusted seat followed by have you any questions. I then drove off and found I was stuck in first gear (its automatic) and didn't know how to get out of it. Solved by stopping and switching off and restarting. Once I got home I read handbook and worked out what I had done!
I picked mine up the last Saturday before lockdown. Because of social distancing he stood outside and explained how to get started. He did say to go back for a proper run though once things get to normal and to call or email him if I needed any help. He also rang the next day on ‘Sunday to see how I was getting on.
Our salesman was brilliant all the way through from order to delivery.

I had a terrible handover - was told would take 1hr 15 mins - took over 4 hours and left with unresolved issues. One extra I’d ordered - apple car play - hadn’t been fitted - I waited about 2 hours for them to fit it - they couldn’t get SIM card to register.
I found it very helpful looking on YouTube prior to collecting at all the features.

Regretfully rejected R Design, Glacier Silver, T4 Auto FWD Convenience Pack, Front Park Assist,Power Glass Tilt & Slide,Smartphone Integration,Winter Pack, Mudflaps
I also look on YouTube whenever I need to find something with the new car. I spent ages today trying to find out how to change the drive mode and eventually saw the button!
The only way to really find everything is to use it and at the moment I very rarely go out.
Stay well everyone xx

You can also download the manual as part of the volvo on call app as well as the manual being available to online...makes a good read.
Must admit I read the manual before I picked my car up....I had long enough to wait lol.
Handover with dealer was probably about an hour. 30 mins sorting out the paperwork etc and 30 mins just showing me through things with the car (and part of that included the salesman getting an error on the tow bar (his fault).
Having had XC40s for two extended test drives I felt quite at ease driving it away.

T4 Auto AWD R Design March 2019
Arrived at the dealership, met the salesman, scribbled my signature on some paperwork and went to the car. He went through all the features I had ordered, made sure my seat was correctly sited, connected my phone and set the navigation for my home address. Then off my wife and I went. No issues at all, great car - had for 13 months now and love it.
Interesting to read the different levels of experience people have had. I’ll report back as and when.
T4 R Design, Auto, Crystal White, Convenience Pack, Winter Pack, Rear Camera, Front Park Assist, Smartphone Integration, Tempa spare wheel and jack.
I had a decent handover of an hour or so despite the fact that it’s my seventeenth car and I know where the gear stick is!
The car has a good deal of technology and when I did the original test drive I’d seen none of the detail of that. I also dropped in a week or so later for some guidance on sorting out a problem with the SIM and whilst there had some help with the self parking which I’d not used before. When you’re parting with almost 40 k for a car any decent dealer will give you whatever handover you want. If you just want the keys thrown at you then they’ll be happy to do that too!
My advice is to decide what suits you and ask for it.....We are all different and dealers expect that. My saleswoman told me they received questions months after purchase that wouldn’t have been needed if the customer had taken the offer of a handover. My daughter has the XC 90 hybrid and doesn’t use most of the bells and whistles it has because she didn’t attend the handover with her husband and she isn’t at all technical and isn’t interested in just exploring the menus, if you are the opposite and you wish to sit with the six hundred plus page handbook then you can use the lockdown to become an expert on everything
