Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert site has a good article. I took his advice.

In a nutshell, with some caveats, he says:
Gap insurance isn't essential as your car insurer should ALREADY pay out for a replacement car. And if the car is less than 12 months old, it will be a brand spanking new car.
I suppose if you've borrowed to purchase the car it's probably worth it.

Just to let you know that we offer a 12 month product called Total Loss Protection. Whilst it's not exactly the same as your traditional GAP insurance we feel for some customers it can make a cost effective alternative.
