Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert site has a good article. I took his advice.

Here's a link:
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/car-i ... insurance/

In a nutshell, with some caveats, he says:

Gap insurance isn't essential as your car insurer should ALREADY pay out for a replacement car. And if the car is less than 12 months old, it will be a brand spanking new car.

I suppose if you've borrowed to purchase the car it's probably worth it.

I have always used ALA they come highly recommended by Which and many forums. Also try the discount code MSE25 which will give you 25% off the premium (this code was still working a couple of weeks ago when I got my cover)

I got 4 years for £257 from Admiral - no idea how good that is but it hammered the dealer's offer of 3 years for c£600

Hi.

Just to let you know that we offer a 12 month product called Total Loss Protection. Whilst it's not exactly the same as your traditional GAP insurance we feel for some customers it can make a cost effective alternative.

Please feel free to take a look if you wish.
