Hi All

Another case of being stuck between choosing a T4 and a T5. Have driven T4 Inscription FWD and T4 R Design Pro AWD (favoured the R Design of the two), but my dealer does not have a T5 XC40 available. Annoyingly the T5 R Design Pro with Xenium Pack comes out at £40,100 (for tax purposes), can get a T5 R Design with most of the Pro pack (on 19s) for just under £40k.

I drove an XC60 T5 this morning (not the newer B5), which I think is the same engine / box as the XC40 and was underwhelmed, however the XC60 is about 10% heavier than an equivalent XC40 (0-60 time is also 6.8s compared to 6.5s in the XC40). Driving that back to back with he T4 AWD XC40, the T4 felt nippier from a standstill - but was noticeably less powerfull when accelerating 50-70 on the dual carriageway.

Does anyone know the physical differences between the T4 ad T5 engines, my dealer said it was just software - however given most tuners seem to be tuning the T4 to about 225hp then I don't think this can be the case. My gut says maybe a slightly bigger turbo, hence slightly more lag (why T4 felt quicker off the line) to give more flow higher up the revs and the higher BHP numbers. While it gives an impressive 30% increase in BHP, it is only ~17% increase in Torque.

T4 is B4204T47 and has a compression ratio of 11.3:1
T5 is B4204T14 and has a compression ratio of 10.8:1

Output aside, this is the only difference I can see in the published documents

I have the T5 and its very quick - 0-60 in just over 6 seconds (as long as you are not in eco mode lol).

What I found with a quick google search was "T4 is equipped with a turbocharger while the T5 comes with a supercharger" I was told the T5 had dual turbochargers by the dealership compared to the T4 single turbocharger. So I am no help :-)

If the ratios are different then there's definitely different internals, could be one of a number of things, but would confirm there is 100% something different internally.

XC40 T4
B4204T47 delivers 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) at 4700 rpm and 300 N⋅m (220 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1400–4000 rpm. The compression ratio was changed to 11.3:1. Single turbocharger.

XC40 T5
B4204T14 delivers 247 PS (182 kW; 244 hp) at 5500 rpm and 350 N⋅m (260 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1800–4800 rpm. The compression ratio was changed to 10.8:1. Single turbocharger.

XC60 T5
B4204T20 delivers 249 PS (183 kW; 246 hp) at 5500 rpm and 350 N⋅m (260 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1500–4500 rpm. Single turbocharger.

Also says "More powerful versions are equipped with a roots type supercharger in addition to being turbocharged and intercooled." however other reading implies that's the 300hp T6 and not the T5.

The T5 in the XC40 is only in that car, so the XC60 I drove is yet another variation of a 2.0 Turbo. The difference to others could just be the pipe work etc to fit the smaller space. Who knows (not volvo sales). XC60 T5 gets more torque low down than the XC40 version, and has a few more horses at the top end.

Thanks, its all relative. We are coming from an S3 with over 310hp from its 2.0, which is really why I'm looking at the T5. The T5 XC40 on paper seems a good compromise to get a better ride in every day driving, at the expense of the extra power and handling.

Think I've found the same article:

https://www.car-buying-strategies.com/Volvo/2019-XC40-trim-levels.html

Strange the volvo sales people don't know this, as if it is true, they are completely different. Wikipedia mentions a supercharger for the more powerful 2.0 engines but doesn't say which ones do and don't have it. Other articles indicate that's the T6.

As you are coming from an S3 it's a no brainer going for the T5 but as you are aware as well as having less power the XC40 has a torque converter auto unlike the manual or DSG of your S3 and so obviously will be nowhere as sporty a drive.

I went for the T4 because I wanted a 4 cylinder and sufficient power and torque (came from a 2.0 diesel Yeti) and find that the T4 is just the ticket for wafting along effortlessly but with power in hand for overtaking and for those occasions when there are 4 or 5 on board. The T5 would be wasted on me as I wouldn't use the additional performance in a car of this type.

Are you aware that you can only have flappy paddles in the R Design? The auto is good but I do use the paddles from time to time for overtaking and climbing hills. You will probably appreciate them.

Thanks ChrisLF

To be honest it will be 90% school runs, driven by my wife, and a T4 will do just fine. Our other car is a Q7, so we'd have no "fun" car anymore, which is why I was wondering about the T5 for the 10% that I drive it solo.

Probably not then. Different if you were doing a good commute every day, as I was before I retired, where the extra performance would have been of benefit.

I haven't driven my T4 in Dynamic mode yet but guess it will go pretty well. Comfort mode and the odd use of the paddles suits how I want to drive the XC40. The engine doesn't seem eager to rev (unlike the TT) though it's only done about 3k. miles so far.

I have the T5 R-Design since October last year & got the Polestar upgrade in December at the 3000km mark. The Pole* software upgrade basically gives you another 20hp in the midrange (172 > 198hp & 258 to 295nm) with a peak power of 252hp / 400nm. But more importantly, the shift seems to quicker which you will definitely appreciate coming from a lighting quick DSG.

Having come from a Renault Megane RS265, the T5 feels quite a bit heavier, so the initial taking off seems a little sluggish but the AWD ensures tractions is never an issue even when I mesh the gas paddle. Driving like a teenager on a country B roads and around tight bends, the car will roll a bit and the tire will protest but overall the chassis remains well behaved. It can definitely keep up with something like a Polo GTI on the street.
