Having just taxed a car, I was digging around the government's vehicle certification website (https://carfueldata.vehicle-certification-agency.gov.uk/new-vehicle-tax.aspx?t=23ude39) and I've noticed that the first year tax cost for the T4 FWD auto XC40 R-Design is £210, as opposed to the £530 I've been quoted for my yet to arrive car. The higher rate is relevant to the AWD version however.

So my question, has anybody taken delivery of a FWD T4 Auto R-Design (with 18" wheels, if that's important) and how much was the 1st year vehicle tax? Or alternatively, can anyone point out where I'm mistaken?

I haven't checked other model versions, but it might be worthwhile you checking your own.

It’s not based on engine size but on the on the list price of the vehicle including factory fitted options. If that is greater than £40k then you pay the higher rate.

Not quite. Year 1 rates are emissions based (range: £0 - £2,135) and Year 2+ are a flat rate of £145 with a £320 supplement for Years 2-6 for cars with a list price of over £40k.

So it's an emissions based question, I suppose, and the FWD T4 appears to be in a different band to the AWD T4. Can any owners confirm?

All explained here: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

The first link has shown that a MY20 R-design pro T4 FWD produces 132gm CO2 and based on that it is £210 1st year tax. However I have checked the V5 for my MY20 R-design pro T4 FWD, it is 156gm CO2 instead thus £530 tax.

Either the web is incorrect or Volvo with have an upgrade later.

My car was registered on 12 July and in the log book it says 154g/km and likewise I paid the £530. I guess the difference to the R Design Pro is down to the weight of the extras on the Pro? Though on mine there are a few extras, including a heavy tow bar so a bit of a nonsense really.

I see from Volvo's pricelist that the T3 is £210 road tax.

Certainly something not right there. The DVLA web-site says that cars registered/taxed before April 2020 will be based on the NEDC figures or converted back from the WLTP figures which from the price list Volvo have done:

All models are type approved to WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) standards. WLTP is the new official test regime for passenger cars replacing the New European Driving Cycle
(NEDC). The CO2 figures have been converted from WLTP back to NEDC-equivalent values in line with current legislation concerning vehicle tax and BIK. CO2 figures may vary according to optional alloy wheel
selection – please see technical specification pages for more information.

I think it likely that the DVLA information is out of date.

Got all excited for a minute there!

You're probably right, but then if The Vehicle Certification Agency is not the single source of data, what is? It's certainly not Volvo's marketing dept.

Might be worth a query with your dealer - I'll certainly be raising it on collection day (unless the data changes before that, obvs)

The premium tax levied on cars that cost more than £40,000 (and which is payable from years two to six) will also rise from £310 to £320 per year. The premium tax is based on the car’s quoted list price before discounts, plus any options you’ve added. The list price should include on-the-road costs such as delivery and numberplates but excludes the first year’s road tax and initial registration fee.
How WLTP testing is affecting VED costs

VED costs have already risen for many new cars in the wake of the WLTP fuel economy tests that replaced the former NEDC system last September. Although these more realistic official tests won’t be used to calculate VED until April 2020, the CO2 emissions of all new cars tested since last September are being converted to correlated NEDC figures, which are, on average, 10-20% higher than before. Certain BMWs, for example, have changed by up to 14%, with 15% adjustments for some Volkswagen models.
As a result, a petrol or diesel car that officially emitted 120g/km under the old regime might now put out 144g/km. Under the new rates, that means a £40 hike in annual VED cost for the petrol car and a £320 jump for the diesel.

Yes, the VCA/DVLA should be the definitive source of data for VED. They are the ones who are recieving the monies (initially) so their published figures should be the ones used for calculating the VED, not what the manufacturers are indicating.

Just looked again via the first link and noticed that if you choose the T4 R Design 18" Alloys (which we are assuming is the FWD version which gives £210 VED) when you reach the page stating the VED etc. it says that the gearbox is AWD, the same gearbox as for the T4 AWD R Design 18" Alloys which indicates the VED of £530!!

What a load of tosh!

I’ve just looked at the paperwork of my pending car. £530 is the 1st years tax. I don’t fully understand what’s going on but it appears everyone pays an inflated 1st years Tax and if your over the 40k mark, you get tucked up even more. Still, it doesn’t matter because we’re all driving on pot hole free roads....
