Hi

While I am still waiting for my XC40, was thinking about upgrading 18" to 20".

What do you think?
It looks nicier, but I am not aware of all other aspects

The basic rule of thumb with larger wheels is that they will reduce the ride comfort to some extent, will cost more for replacement tyres, and make it easier to kerb the alloys due to less tyre depth. They do however generally look good! If ride comfort is important to you it may be wise to try and get a test drive on a car with the 20" wheels.

Others on this forum may be able to comment on their subjective experience of larger wheels. I have 19" on an Inscription (which has the same suspension as the Momentum) and find them to be fine despite my priority being comfort not 'sportyness' on this sort of vehicle.

Thanks :)
How this contribute to the feeling of the road? I had a test drive with the standard 18" wheels, and would prefer to be bit "higher"
I can't test drive: is it significant going up to 19 from 18?
Yes, ride comfort is very important for me

Do you want this wheel or a bigger wheel?
When I spec my XC40, I considered a trim then add options either factory fit or dealer fit but all end up too expensive and not economical vs a standard trim spec. One reason for that was to avoid the luxury car VED in the UK. I also want to add the 4C to aid ride comfort. For example if I picked the momentum trim and add the big wheel, leather seat and privacy glass would make the list price of the car close to a r design. I end up ordered the r design pro w/o 4C. However the 19" 922 wheel is a good choice for the momentum trim upgrade.

Thanks, so it looks like there is a consensus for 19"

You will not be higher on bigger wheels. With bigger wheels, lower profile tyres are fitted so the overall wheel + tyre diameter is the same.

I cannot think of any benefit of larger wheels other than the appearance. Even the fuel economy is slightly worse on bigger wheels.

Sports cars can benefit from lower profile tyres because steering inputs are transmitted to the road fractionally quicker but this is not really relevant for a comfort-oriented SUV in my opinion.

It is down to personal preference IMO. Enjoy your new car and look out for a glacier silver Rd-pro.

Have fun....

I can see no practical benefit when ride comfort is your priority, but if you really prefer the look, it's your money and your choice...

I’ve recently driven an inscription (18”) and inscription pro (19”) back to back and the 18’s have less road noise (but don’t look as good). The ride is fairly similar. Trouble is I’m now torn between an inscription and an R-Design because the 18” wheels look so much nicer on the R-Design
