I know not to trust manufacturer fuel economy figures but for a T5 AWD with 20" wheels, Volvo claim 31 mpg city 39.8 mpg combined.

If I drive carefully I'm lucky to get 25mpg.

Am I doing something wrong? That seems fairly abysmal!

I have a T5 AWD and average around 32 mpg - going up to 38 ish on long journeys (according to the car). I drive in what is essentially Comfort mode with start-stop disabled. How many miles have you done? I seem to remember being shocked by the mpg for the first couple of thousand miles.

Just over 2,000 so maybe that's why? I'd be happy with 32mpg!

I use Fuelly as I don’t really trust the cars information and am getting 28.8 over my first 1500 miles with a best of 34.7 and worst of 17 although that one included sitting on my driveway a lot with the engine running learning all the tech in the car!

According The the car I get around 30 mpg on my 9 mile trip to work which is about 50:50 on major road at 65-70mph and country/town roads at 30-50 mph.

That’s all driving with a view to fuel economy and it goes down quite considerably if I have a bit of fun!!
Ordered T5 R-Design Pro with most of the bells and whistles in early May ‘18 and received delivery at end of Jan ‘19

I only have the poor man's T4 but, I think 'abysmal' is a bit harsh.

To me, it only seems like yesterday when 200bhp from a Subaru Imprezza was headline news.

190/250hp cars aren't exactly economy monsters. On top of that, my XC40:

Is sturdy (= heavy)
Has the aerodynamics of a brick
Has the benefit of a super smooth torque converter gearbox
Has a semi-permanent (insofar as it always engaged from standstill) AWD

My T4 averages just above 30 mpg though, from cold, the mpg is hideous (though typical for the class). It therefore follows that lots of short journeys will result in a very low mpg; longer journeys result in a more acceptable figure.

I'm happy with my mpg - I chose not to buy a Fiat Panda

My wife has a Fiat Panda and their forum has people on there complaining about the fuel consumption too!
Small twin cylinder petrol engine plus turbo =running boost all the time= high fuel consumption!
Hilarious car to drive mind!

My last car was a petrol engined SUV and I was shocked by that fuel consumption too, but it’s what you have to accept in a heavy , un-aerodynamic car with auto box and 4 wheel drive ( as has already been said). The torque curve of a petrol doesn’t help either. Diesel suits these cars best. Shame they are considered no longer fashionable.

After 1700 miles, I’ve got 30.3mpg in my T4 Auto AWD. Mostly mixed driving on the odd motorway and city roads. Start/stop turned off and mostly in Eco. I’ve learned to accept it for what it is and just enjoy the car!
