Just been out to have a look in my car.
Have to say that I’ve used multiple usb to c cables and the only issue I had was one that would intermittently disconnect.
They’ve all started AA up with no issues.
The one I’ve got in there is a short cable I bought off eBay which just works.
When I connect the phone using the “white” socket I see as per the attached under Settings - USB controlled by the Phone.
If I use the other usb socket I get the USB controlled by Phone AND Use USB for transferring files.
One other thing is that there is an option in the car settings that will run AA automatically when it detects a phone being plugged in.
Is that set on. if it is try setting it to off.
Have you tried another android phone.
Finally scrounge an iPhone and see if that works. ;-]

Thanks for all the comments.
I went to the dealership I bought the car from and after 3 technicians looked at it they confirmed there is a problem and the apple car play doesn't work either
They have no idea so need to take it in to run a Vida report and send it to Volvo to work out the problem and a solution and it's not allowed to be driven during this time - so overall a bit of a pain
On a positive at least it's not user error
