I noticed that Volvo Italy is now listing T5 Twin Engine AWD between the possible engines and with specific accessory cables available.

Specs should be around the following:
1.5 gas engine + electric motor
247 hp total
Android P based redesigned Sensus system
Pilot Assist Version 3 (Current XC40 has version 2)
All wheel drive

That sounds really interesting and hopefully will come to UK soon. Earlier reports had said it wouldn't be AWD which would have ruled it out for me.

Do you have a link as I can’t find it? How much was it?

"Imminent" seems to be quite a leap of faith, based purely on the fact that the twin engine has been listed within the accessories catalogue.

Just about every European country except the UK has the MY20 cars on the configurator but none offer the twin engine yet - nor has it passed WLTP.

Looks like whoever maintains the website data has just tagged 'twin engine' onto existing 'T5 AWD' in error.

There is only a single electric motor (coupled to the T3 engine) under the bonnet. Drive is to front wheels via a 7 speed DCT - no driveshaft to rear.

That is what I had read re FWD only. Seems absolutely crazy to have two motors and only FWD. Immediately means it is no use to me and everyone else who needs or wants AWD. After having AWDs I would never go back even if I didn't need off road ability.

But both motors are up front - don't think there's room for a rear engine, nor a propshaft (due to battery placement).

Does any hybrid really provide proper traditional AWD benefits anyway?

My outlander definitely was great AWD. The great advantage for an electric motor is the torque curve - you don’t need a low range box. On low traction surfaces, the outlander would survive where even defenders got stuck - it just lacked the ground clearance. The battery weight meant it was 3cm lower than the standard, or equivalent Freelander / Disco Sport.
