For a T4 (B4) expect to average 25 to 30mpg for everyday runs of mixed motoring. Rising to 40mpg for longer motorway runs at speed 70+, with up to 45-50mpg for longer motorway runs at more sedate 55-60 speeds.
Short (to the shop and back) expect 10-15mpg.

Overall 30mpg in my T4 AWD over 3,000 miles. Would expect B4 to similar if not identical.

The new VW Golf looks good

Thanks for the reply.
The specs on engines ,in the build your own section, say average MPG difference is 6.35 extra for the D. AWD.
Saving @£325 on my mileage.I guess the petrol engine is quieter.
Also no adblue problems, and consequent particulate filter issues.
We do live in the sticks in hilly Devon.

I don't know your details but at 8k miles a year and a 6.35mpg difference and accounting for petrol being cheaper than diesel I'd say your saving with a D4 would be more like £200 per year, rather than £325

I moved from a DS too. Very happy with the petrol I do about 10k miles per annum. Don't miss the smell, noise and additional hassle (like DPF) of a derv. I average 36mpg generally...can get higher when doing some longer journeys

I'd be more than happy with 36 Mpg ,blastpipe.

Whatnext ,I think you may mean per annum rather than month.
My calculations on 8000 miles per year at 35.3 mpg petrol. use 226 gallons
41.65 mpg diesel use 192 gallons. Difference 34 x say £5.50/gallon price=£187/year.

£187 -not much to be honest, cheaper to buy, also to service ,able to drive in cities etc.

Let me know if i've got this wrong please.

Just one way to amuse while self isolating.

Yes, sorry !! £200 per annum.

So my calc at £200/annum and yours at £187/annum broadly agree.

It was your original £325/annum that I was questioning.

Hello Blastpipe, interesting that you moved from your DS too.
Bet you had less trouble with it than us?
Purchased new 2.5 years ago-Diesel HSE

1-Replaced engine balance shaft.
2-Replaced engine.
3-new drive shaft
4-new bonnet catches because alarm kept going off.
5-Heater and blower replaced.

Such a shame as it's a good looking car, nice to drive, manufactured in Britain. But it has to go when the warranty expires!

Oh yes good was worse than mine.
Had mine about a year.. I had b pillar rattle... A ventilation fan that kept stopping... Early oil changes and worst of a the drivers seat was giving me terrible back pain. I'd seen on the forums that the DS had engine issues (derv) so it helped my decision to get shot. Shame I thought it was a car I would keep for many years having had umpteen freelanders.

The xc40 is a much better size than the DS for my needs. And seems just as capable as a DS.

Perhaps it was the DS that steered me away from derv.
I'm very happy with my xc40

Diesel engine in the XC40 is being phased out very soon thats why I went for petrol. If I had bought the diesel was worried about the resale value when the time came. Also with cities banning diesels from their centres not worth the risk of buying.
