Stop start is really erratic. Is it worth the bother in terms of fuel economy? Have XC 40 3 months and already the connected battery has been replaced and the function is still tempremental. Anyone else frustrated with this feature of the XC 40? DD

Apparently with automatics which I have it's pointless so I try to turn it off as much as possible

Mine will often stop the engine when I come to stop, the auto brakes are applied (green A symbol), I lift my foot off the brake, the car doesn't move but the engine switches on again. Bit pointless really!

When I was buying my last car, nearly five years ago, an Outlander PHEV, they told me Mitsubishi were taking the functionality out of their cars - autos at least - because it wasn’t saving fuel, and might even be making things worse.

With a manual it’s not such a problem, it’s easily controlled by the driver and clutch pedal. At a roundabout or slow moving traffic, the driver keeps the clutch depressed. At traffic lights, he releases the clutch and the engine stops. Autos will stop at the first hint of stationary traffic, so for a seconds worth of stationary traffic, the engine still stops, has to restart, and uses more fuel in the process.

I agree that for an automatic it is nothing but a nuisance, so I have created an Individual Driving Mode with it disabled. Unfortunately this means that I have to remember to select this mode every time I start the car, as it insists in always starting in Comfort mode, and there is no way of amending Comfort mode so that the feature is permanently disabled.

I try to always disable this prior to every journey. It may save a pint of fuel over a year but I think the starter motor must be under a lot more strain. I want to be in a situation when I can accelerate immediately without that moments hesitation.

My Individual Drive Mode is essentially comfort with start/stop turned off. Two presses of the mode button after start and I never have to be annoyed by the damn thing! My previous Mercedes had a button for turning off the start/stop, again, it was the first thing I pressed after starting the car.

I remember reading on the Swedespeed forum that there was a software update for the USA soon after the car's launch to enable start/stop to be permanently selected off as a choice in the settings. Seems we Europeans aren't allowed to have the freedom of choice.

I have a problem where Stop/Start fails to work at all on one commute trip and then works for the next several commute trips and then that pattern repeats. Its one of the several minor issues I will report at the upcoming annual service.

I think the system is intelligent enough not to overstress the battery, so if you have done a few short stop/start trips it will then give the battery a break by not stop/starting until you have done enough to recharge it.

My Golf did a similar thing where an icon on the dash would indicate stop/start system unavailable sometimes.

So not a fault.
