Volvo On Call App
Couldn't connect last night or first thing this morning.
Ok now so maybe driving the car today cleared whatever caused the problem.

Can anyone tell me if you have to have the Volvo On Call app running with the phone connected to the car in order for the “Driving Journal” to record journey details or does the car send the data via Volvo Connect without the app anyway?

Works independently. Car seems to record data and then uploads to "somewhere". You simply access the "journal" in the app as and when you want - it then accessing the data needed from the "somewhere".
I suspect that somewhere is on Volvo's servers. So they could have a complete record of all your journeys. Though do wonder if they purge after 100 days -and hence why you only get the last 100 days max data shown in the app
Beware though if you delete any journeys in the app - I think they are gone. I haven't found a way to reload them.

Looks like the On Call Europe server is down again, been unable to log in on any device for the last 1/2 hour...

I can’t get in and haven’t been able to for a few hours. I called using the button in the car and was told I wasn’t registered which I explained was odd as things had been working fine since I picked up the car on Friday where I had registered. When trying to log in via the app I get the error message ‘we encountered a problem. Please try again’.
Weirdly, I am not getting any internet in the car either so no Spotify, wiki, album art from Bluetooth, etc. I tried to log on to my internet at home which connects but won’t solve the problem so perhaps my problems are deeper. I bloody hate Halloween.
