Has anybody fitted a motorway toll payment tag to their XC40? The people who manage the French toll roads advise that it should be fitted to the grey/blacked out area of the windscreen, normally behind the rear-view mirror. This avoids any interference from the windscreen heating elements screening the signal from the tag. But in the Volvo this area is occupied by the Intellisafe binnacle. Has anybody tried fitting it elsewhere on the windscreen?

I have one but haven't been to France yet since I got my XC40 a week ago!
On my Tiguan and other cars it didn't seem to matter where it was as sometimes my wife just held it up in a hire car and it worked. Mind you a bit hairy driving up to barrier first time in each car not knowing if it would work!
I was told it was only a problem if you had a heated windscreen which neither car had.
Be glad to hear how you get on. I am unlikely to use mine before July.

I’ve just installed mine in preparation for a trip through France down to the Dordogne.

I’m quite confident it will work fine. The heated screen on the XC40 is made up of very fine elements with quite a gap between them and as I won’t be having the heated screen turned on I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.

My previous car had a heated screen which had a very fine metallic layer sandwiched in the laminated screen. That definitely caused a problem with both the sat nav gps and the toll tag unless I placed them in the dotted area. I was under the impression with that car that the dotted area was there as a consequence of the metallic layer being known to cause problems, I’m hoping that the lack of a dotted area in the XC40 implies that the heated screen shouldn’t cause a problem. Fingers crossed...

Doesn't add a lot to the discussion but I remember this old thread. The last post seems to suggest that there isn't a problem

I have a tag in my XC40 for the French tolls - works fine with no issues.

On a UK car i have installed on the passenger side about 1 inch left of the intellisafe binnacle / 1 inch below the top of the windscreen.

Hope the pics help.

Yes, it is a heated windscreen, no issues experienced.

Thanks for all your comments - seems as though it won't be a problem. I do get a smug satisfaction of by-passing the queues at the other barriers!

Hi, resurrecting an old thread - does anyone have more experience of using a tag with a heated windscreen? Thanks

I use a Bip & Go tag almost every day and since many years. I use a few different cars, so I don’t have the tag installed in a specific vehicle, but I just put it on the dashboard of the vehicle I’m using that day : no problem whatsoever.
I haven’t used it with a heated windscreen Volvo XC40, but with my Audi's it’s no problem.
