Unusual screenwash consumption

Hi everyone,

27th January I put about 2 litres of screenwash in my XC40 after the low level warning came up. The warning is back again after less than two weeks which doesn't sound right to me. Has anyone else had the same issue? Also, what is the capacity of the screen wash tank?

Many thanks

Did you have a mixture which was sufficient for the recent temps as it could have cracked if it's frozen.

As for volume, warning comes on with 1 litre left in the tank and here's the capacities
Cars with headlamp washing: 5.5 litres (5.8 qts).
Cars without headlamp washing: 3.5 litres (3.7 qts).

I'm going through far more than my old car as well. I think it's a mixture of the headlamp washers which I've never had before, and the spray on the wipers which might be using more than spray on windscreen.

Mine lasts ok, but I don't have the headlight washers.

Hi BA777

Same thing with me. Seemed to be getting through the screen wash i added quite quickly. Wipers put on a good amount and its also the first car i've had headlight washers on (as someone else mentioned) so am putting it down to that.

An Audi A3 I owned some years ago had the same problem. Audi dealers response was the usual "They all do that Sir". Eventually located the problem myself - a headlamp washer pipe had been partly cut through during assembly! Oddly, this didn't result in a visible leak under the car, presumably the washer fluid must have been collecting in the undertrays, then being jettisoned when the car was driven.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I'll have a look into it some more and keep an eye on the consumption and report back if I learn any more.

I've re-filled my windscreen wash once in 7500 miles and I do have the headlamp washers. The screen wipers do seem to push out a good amount of water, because of this I've found that I need to operate the washers for a much shorter time than on previous cars.

Washers spray out copious quantity.
Perhaps press button for shorter time
