I think you have hit upon an important point here. IMHO with a modern radial road tyre the air pocket impact on cushioning is almost zero - the cushioning comes from flex in the tyre wall. I understand that this is why run flat tyres are so harsh.

I am sure we all remember the honourable LJK Setright (I hope I spelt that right). He wrote a superb article on this topic.

The wheels are a personal thing. For me the 20" are cracking looking wheels and really compliment the look of the car. Volvo have made a right old mess with an inability to step up to meet the demand.

So sacrificing 8mm "height" in moving from 19" to 20" but gaining 10mm width. Not saying the two compensate, but perhaps the ride difference isn't as big as people think.

Different story if you are going as far as 21" - boy those are thin.
You forgot to add this 1''. So overall in moving from 19'' to 20'' you gain height (aprox. 17mm)
